Dancing and Calling

The American Folk Dance Program is rich in dances including those in the New England Contra Dances, Southern Squares, Circle Dances and Longways Sets. A familiar longways set is the Virginia Reel. This dance has a long history of being presented to school children across the United States. As a dance caller, I enjoy teaching beginners the dance and watching their faces light up with laughter as confusion ensues with a missed turn or a wrong hand being presented. Everyone laughs! It's a great way to enjoy the company of others, keep the brain cells working, in addition to moving muscles and bones. Wow! I have been invited to call one night dances for private parties, wedding receptions and birthday parties. I also call regularly scheduled dances in the Baltimore, DC, Annapolis areas. In addition I call dances for school events with grades K -12. I´d love to introduce or further your knowledge of this type of dancing.
