Annapolis Traditional Dance Society
The Annapolis Traditional Dance Society (ATDS) was birthed in 1988 by two folks who wanted to share their love of American Folk Dance with the community at large. ATDS sponsors Almost Heaven, an annual get-away family dance weekend over the Memorial Day holiday, held at Timber Ridge Camp near Capon Bridge, West Virginia. ATDS also hosts a monthly contra and square dance which has had various homes over the past 21 years, and now takes place at the Friends Meeting Hall on Dubois Road in Annapolis.
The dance is the 3rd Saturday of the month and features live music. The evening begins with a workshop at 6:30. The dance begins at 7 and goes until 10 and each dance is walked through before adding the music. The caller continues to call the dance to keep the dancers cued. This is a smoke-free and alcohol-free environment promoting a healthy way to have fun and promote community. All ages and levels of experience are welcome and it is not necessary to bring a partner.
As a dance organization, we are interested in reaching out to youth groups and school programs in order to provide alternative group activities. Contra dance is one venue that incorporates right and left brain activity therefore providing a multi tasking activity. Historically, American Folk Dance was taught for its ability to express manners and social skills, as well as for its physical merits. We have been given opportunities to present American Folk Dance to Key School in Annapolis, and Day of Dance, Severna Park, MD sponsored by Baltimore Washington Medical Center. Please contact us for more information concerning American Folk Dance programs.
ATDS is a member of Country Dance and Song Society established in 1915 to preserve American Folk Dance along with American Folk Songs and Music.
