The Beat Goes On and On
My dad was a self-taught musician who played guitar, mandolin and pedal steel. He grew up in western North Carolina listening to relatives play music, as well as listening to the Grand Old Opry. As kids we were infused with George Jones, Connie Francis, Johnny Horton, and Patsy Cline. He played in various bands and recorded in Nashville, TN. Often he would do some shuffling jig steps in the kitchen and would recite non-sensical rhythms with his tapping sounds. My mom was also an influence for my love of music and dance. We'd sit and watch the Buddy Dean show as I learned to do the twist, mashed potato and to pony.
I'm keeping the family tradition alive with learning to play the mandolin and perform with two bands, "Red Crow" and "West Annapolis Crab Tippers". "Red Crow" plays at "Hancock's Resolution Historic Farm Park, Anne Arundel County, MD. on special occasions. "West Annapolis Crab Tippers" enjoy playing for family square and circle dances.
